I Introduction
The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, now the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE), of Yangzhou University was founded in 1952 as a section of Yangzhou Normal College. At present, SCCE offers six undergraduate majors, including Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Polymer Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering & Processing, Medicinal Engineering, and Materials Chemistry. Both Chemistry and Materials Science disciplines rank among the top 1% worldwide by the essential scientific index (ESI). Moreover, SSCE boasts its primary Chemistry discipline doctoral programs covering Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Physics, Environmental Chemistry, Food Chemistry. Notably, both Chemistry and Applied Chemistry subjects are elected to the ‘Jiangsu Provincial Key Subjects’, while its Polymer Material Science & Engineering is elected to the ‘Excellence Engineers Education Programs’ by the Chinese Education Ministry and ‘Specially Supported Majors’ in Jiangsu Province.
SCCE offers three Master’s programs for primary-level disciplines in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering & Technology and Materials Science & Engineering, and 13 subordinate discipline Master’s programs covering Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, Biochemistry, Applied Chemistry, Industrial Catalysis, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Processing, and Teaching of Chemistry. SCCE currently has a provincial key laboratory of "Environmental Materials and Environmental Engineering". It also has three ‘National Excellent Courses’, namely Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and General Chemistry; one ‘National bilingual education demo course’ (Organic Chemistry); one ‘National-level teaching team’ (teaching team of Physical Chemistry); and 4 provincial-level ‘Distinctive Majors’.
SCCE hosts a provincial experimental teaching model center with state-of-the-art instruments and management model. It has also established a testing center for large-scale instruments, providing a strong support for scientific research and technical/social services, which has passed national metrology accreditation and laboratory accreditation. In collaboration with local enterprises, SCCE has established three provincial engineering technological research centers.
SCCE is home to more than 1500 undergraduate and graduate students and has high-quality teaching staff, with 120 full-time teachers, including 47 professors and 46 associate professors. 98 faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees. In the past three years, SCCE has managed to run more than 100 provincial (ministerial)-level scientific research projects, including about 40 National Natural Science Foundation projects.
Here at SCCE, we attach great importance to the strengthening of students’ abilities to practice what they have learnt from courses and encourage them to innovate. Exchange and collaborative research initiatives with top-tier foreign universities are also strongly supported.
II Training objectives
√ To understand the core problems relevant to the subdisciplines of chemistry and chemical engineering through extensive training in theory, lab experiments and, optionally but preferably, industrial practice
√ To acquire the capability, including communication and other soft and interpersonal skills, to conduct independent and collaborative academic research in a field related to chemistry, chemical engineering or other relevant disciplines

III Research fields
Six research fields are offered in this joint program:
Chemical Engineering
√ Study the principles and common laws of chemical industrial processes and solve engineering problems such as simulation, amplification, design, operation and optimization of chemical processes and their devices;
√ Focus on the design and development of chemical reaction engineering, separation engineering, chemical process simulation and optimization, chemical safety engineering, etc.
Chemical Technology
√ Study the synthetic mechanism, production principle, technological process, technological conditions and production equipment of chemicals;
√ Focus on the design and development of petrochemistry, basic organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, material chemistry, energy chemistry, chemical process reinforcement;
Applied Chemistry
√ Study the preparation principle of fine chemicals, special chemicals, functional materials, the relationship between product structure and performance, and production technology;
√ Focus on the research of preparation principle of fine chemicals, special chemicals, functional materials, relationship between product structure and performance, and production technology
Industrial Catalysis
√ Study the catalysis in chemical process, catalysis in energy and resource conversion process, environmental catalysis;
√ Focus on the research of surface catalysis, molecular catalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, catalytic reaction engineering, novel catalytic materials development
Pharmaceutical Engineering
√ Study the synthesis mechanism, production principle, process and device design of drugs and their intermediates, new preparation technologies, drug safety and quality control
Materials Chemical Engineering
√ Study the theory and method of chemical engineering used to guide the material preparation and processing process, and the material preparation, optimize the processing technology and operating conditions, reveal the relationship of the function-structure-application in materials
Ⅳ Duration
A full-time graduate student should expect to study a minimum of six semesters to complete the degree requirements. The maximum of ten semesters is also allowed to complete the degree requirements.

Ⅵ Main training process and assessment requirements
1. Course study
The course study is conducted in strict accordance with the curriculum setting of the major and the graduate student's personal training plan. In principle, the course is completed within the first academic year. The course learning can take various forms, such as classroom teaching, teacher-student discussion, students' self-study, review and report, etc. By guiding reading, enlightening thinking and training writing, it focuses on cultivating the ability of independent analysis and problem solving of graduate students. Graduate students must pass the examination (or test), the results of the qualified can be awarded credit. The examination can be carried out in the form of written examination (open book, closed book), writing course paper and so on. Those who fail to pass the course should retake it. Those who fail to pass the examination twice will be disqualified for graduation and degree application.
2. Academic activities
Postgraduates should take an active part in various academic exchange activities and encourage them to conduct academic exchanges with their counterparts at home and abroad. Postgraduate students shall participate in academic reports and thematic discussions for no less than 20 times. After participating in academic activities, students should fill in the《Record Form of Academic Activities for Postgraduates of Yangzhou University》to make comments on academic activities. The graduate students who make academic reports should fill in the《Registration Form for Graduate Academic Reports of Yangzhou University》, and attach the written materials or copies of the reports. The above forms will be collected by the graduate secretary of the school after being reviewed and signed by the supervisor, and submitted to the school for review and archiving. Only those who have completed the relevant regulations of the《Opinions of Yangzhou University on the Establishment of Postgraduate Academic Lecture System》(Yang Dayan [2004] No.14) can get 2 credits.
3. Experiment and Practice
Postgraduates should actively participate in their supervisors' research projects, guide undergraduates' scientific innovation experiments and undergraduate experiment teaching. For specific work, they should fill in the《Yangzhou University Graduate Practice Test Form》, which will be collected by the graduate secretary of the school after being reviewed and signed by the supervisor and submitted to the school for review, without credit.
4. Comprehensive Discipline Assessment
Organize a discipline comprehensive assessment group composed of 3-5 teachers of the discipline and related disciplines with senior titles. Before the completion of postgraduate courses and the commencement of dissertation (usually in the third semester), a comprehensive assessment of knowledge structure, ability and quality will be conducted on the study of postgraduate courses, literature reading of the discipline and the mastery of the research frontier of the discipline. The result of comprehensive examination is evaluated according to excellent, good, qualified or unqualified. If problems are found in the comprehensive assessment of the subject, the instructor should give special guidance and consultation to them, repair or rebuild the course for the existing problems, adjust the training plan if necessary, and eliminate those who are not suitable for continuing to study until they drop out.
5. Mid-term examination
The mid-term assessment of graduate students shall be carried out in the third semester after the completion of the course study, and in special cases, it shall be completed in the fourth semester at the latest, combined with the thesis proposal work. The examination work is organized by the school. Postgraduates are required to fill in the mid-term examination form for postgraduates of Yangzhou University and report the progress of course learning, scientific research and experiments. The examination team will assess whether the course learning of postgraduates meets the prescribed requirements. Whether they have certain scientific research ability, literature review ability, data analysis and processing ability, experimental ability and possible problems and measures taken. The results of the mid-term examination and the mid-term examination form should be submitted to the Graduate Management Office of the School for archiving.
Those who fail to pass the mid-term assessment can apply for the mid-term assessment again after half a year. If you fail to pass the mid-term examination without any special reason, you are advised to drop out of school.
6. Thesis proposal
The dissertation should be started in the third semester. In special cases, the thesis should be completed in the fourth semester. The assessment team for the thesis proposal work shall be composed of 3-5 people, with the person in charge of the academic site as the group leader. For the thesis proposal of cross disciplines, experts of related disciplines shall be invited to participate in the assessment team. The opening report should be made public within the discipline or the discipline related to the topic selection of the thesis. The assessment team is responsible for demonstrating the scientificity, innovation and feasibility of the topic selection of the graduate thesis and forming a concluding written opinion. Those who fail to pass the demonstration of the proposal report should continue to prepare for the thesis proposal and start the proposal again three months later. If the second argumentation is not passed, the argumentation shall be postponed to the next year.
7. Mid-term examination of paper
Under the guidance of the supervisor, the master students make a phased summary of the thesis work, elaborate the completed thesis work content and the phased achievements, including the theoretical research, experimental research and the conclusions obtained, and make the next research plan and the research content to be completed. During the mid-term examination, the paper publication situation should be introduced, and the paper publication plan related to the research topic and the content of the paper to be published should be formulated. Master students generally should be in the completion of the thesis opening report after a semester or so to accept the mid-term examination of the thesis. The mid-term examination shall be submitted in written form to the discipline, and the supervisor shall give comments on the mid-term report of the student. The comments shall include the evaluation of the student's existing work, especially the completion of the personal development plan, the student's performance, and the estimation of the follow-up work.
Each discipline shall organize a mid-term review group of 3-5 persons to conduct mid-term review of the master's thesis of this discipline by the supervisor or the person in charge of the guidance group. The form can be combined with the academic discussion or special research report of the graduate students.
The mid-term examination group evaluates the stage work of the master's thesis according to the mid-term examination report and the supervisor's evaluation. The evaluation of stage work of dissertation can be divided into qualified and unqualified. For those who fail to pass the mid-term examination of their thesis, they will be dealt with according to the relevant regulations of the University after the review of the School and the reconsideration of the Graduate School and the confirmation that they do not meet the requirements for the qualification recognition of master students.
8. Pre-defense of thesis
The pre-examination of the master's thesis is organized by the school before submission. The pre-examination will be carried out in the middle of April of the sixth semester. The thesis should not be less than 80 pages, and the body should contain at least three chapters in addition to the introduction and references. All graduate students applying for master's degree should write the thesis in strict accordance with the academic standards and the requirements of the thesis format. After completing the first draft of the dissertation and getting the approval of the supervisor, they should submit the application for pre-examination.
The pre-examination group evaluates the dissertations according to the scoring index of "Dissertation Evaluation Book for Postgraduate Students of Yangzhou University". Those who pass the preliminary examination can enter the process of submitting their papers for review. Those who fail to meet the requirements of the preliminary examination should modify and supplement their papers. They should apply for the preliminary examination again after two weeks with the consent of the supervisor.
9. The paper review
Papers are evaluated in two ways: college submission and school selection submission. For the master's thesis that has passed the pre-examination before the defense, the university or college shall organize the thesis to be sent to two peer experts for evaluation. Papers are evaluated by double-blind submission. The evaluator should be an expert with the title of associate senior or above (including associate senior) in the subject field and the qualification of master student instructor. The experts selected by the school for review and evaluation are all experts from outside the school, and at least one of the experts submitted by the school for review is a peer expert from outside the school. Those whose thesis evaluation results are all qualified or above can enter the defense link.
10. Dissertation
The defense of master's thesis shall be organized by the school, and the specific defense shall be taken charge of by the Defense Committee, which shall be composed of no less than 5 experts related to the field. The chairman of the Defense Committee shall be a professor with deep academic attainments in the discipline or an external expert entrusted by the principal of the discipline. It shall be implemented in accordance with the《Rules for Awarding Doctoral and Master Degrees of Yangzhou University》([2014] No. 36 of Graduate Institute of Yang University).
Ⅶ Module Aims (Core Curriculum)
1. Chemical Transfer Processes
This module will introduce the chemical transfer process of physical quantities such as momentum, heat and mass. The research is mainly divided into three levels: molecular level, which describes the momentum, heat and mass transfer coefficient of macroscopic substances according to the molecular structure model; Continuum level, which ignores the movement of molecules, using a set of change equations to describe the change of three physical quantities; Device level, which looks at the quantitative relationship between the inputs and outputs of multiple devices or parts of devices.
2. Advanced Reaction Engineering
This module focuses on clarifying the basic principle of industrialization of chemical reaction process. Based on the thermal balance of matter, chemical reaction dynamics and typical reactors, it explains the law of interaction between reaction process and fluid flow, material mixing, heat and mass transfer and other processes. By introducing the basic principle of reaction engineering, reactor development and design, and case analysis of industrial reaction process, it enables students to master the basic knowledge of chemical reaction process and have the ability to design and optimize industrial reaction process.
3. Advanced Separation Engineering
This module mainly teaches the basic principle of material separation operation in process industry, process reinforcement and engineering application, and introduces the new progress and new methods of separation engineering. The main contents include balance separation process, rate separation process, separation equipment structure and performance, separation material structure and performance, separation process amplification, separation process cases and analysis, etc. Through the study of this course, graduate students can improve their engineering and technical ability to independently analyze and solve the separation of complex material systems.
4. Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics
Advanced chemical thermodynamics is the theoretical basis of the design and development of chemical process research. Based on the main laws of thermodynamics, the main task of advanced chemical thermodynamics is to study the theoretical limit of equilibrium between the effective utilization of substances and the mutual conversion of energy, as well as the effective utilization of various physical and chemical changes in the chemical process.
