High voltage aqueous electrochemical energy storage devices have gained significant attention recently due to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Through the addition of a solid-electrolyte interphase, usage of a concentrated electrolyte or adjustment of the pH of their electrolytes, it is hopeful to endow these aqueous energy-storage devices with a broadened voltage. Among all of them, aqueous lithium-ion batteries have a longer lifespan and a promising future in energy storage systems. In this review, the aqueous batteries/capacitors are discussed and classified according to their voltages improvement techniques. As know, aqueous lithium-ion batteries, promising for energy storage, usually have a higher energy density and longer lifespan, compared with traditional Lead-acid batteries even Ni-MH batteries. In this review, they will be carefully discussed. Besides, recent progress is focused. Finally, we present a conclusion and a vision of the future development of aqueous energy-storage devices.
